MANCHESTER, N.H. – Manchester Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams stopped 40 of 41 shots and Nic Pierog scored twice as Manchester topped the Reading Royals, 2-1, in overtime Saturday night at SNHU Arena.
The Monarchs (16-15-1-1) battled back in the third and eventually defeated the Royals (16-9-4-5) in overtime, 2-1.
At 15:28 of the first period, Royals forward Chris McCarthy put a shot on Williams producing a rebound at the far side of the crease, where Alex Roos, scoring his seventh goal of the season, buried it over the sprawling goaltender to give Reading a 1-0 lead.
The Royals carried their lead late into the third period, but the Monarchs got on the board with 6:07 remaining in the game to tie the game, 1-1. Cory Ward found Pierog at the top of the right circle, and his shot beat D’Agostini over the glove, marking his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
Ward and Pierog connected again at 1:27 of overtime, when Ward dished a pass from the side boards to a wide-open Pierog in the slot, where he roofed a wrist shot over D’Agostini’s blocker to secure the comeback victory, by a score of 2-1.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday, Jan. 6 at 3 p.m., when they take on the Norfolk Admirals at SNHU Arena. For tickets, Season Memberships and group tickets, please contact the Monarchs front office at 603-626-7825.
