Monarchs Fall To Mariners, 4-3

PORTLAND, MAINE –The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Maine Mariners, Wednesday night, by a score of 4-3, at the Cross Insurance Arena. 

The Monarchs (2-2-0-1) scored two late third period goals, but were unable to comeback against the Mariners (2-3-0-0), who came away with their second straight victory.

The Monarchs started the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:57 of the first period, on the second goal of the season by Spencer Watson. Colton Saucerman faked a shot and sent a pass to Watson, who wristed a shot, top shelf over the glove of Mariners goaltender, Connor LaCouvee, to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

The Mariners evened things up at 16:58 of the second period on the second goal of the season by Drew Melanson. Zach Tolkinen took a shot from the right point, that was knocked down in front of Monarchs goaltender, Cole Kehler, where Melanson picked up the rebound and pushed the puck home, to make the score, 1-1.

The Mariners took the lead at 5:23 of the third period on the first goal of the season by Dwyer Tschantz. John Furgele wristed a shot from the top of the right circle, where Tschantz gathered the puck off the rebound and beat Kehler to make the score, 2-1.

The Mariners extended their lead at 16:37 of the third period on the first goal of the season by Brycen Martin. Melanson worked his way into the offensive zone and dropped a pass in the slot for Melanson, where he wristed a shot past Kehler, to make the score, 3-1.

Manchester answered just :27 seconds later, on the second goal of the season by Stepan Falkovsky. Falkovsky wristed a shot towards goal, that deflected off a Mariner in front of the net and crawled through the legs of LaCouvee, to put the Monarchs within a goal, 3-2.

After a Mariners empty-net goal made it 4-2, the Monarchs scored one last time, at 19:21 of the third, on the fourth goal of the season for Tony Cameranesi. After receiving a pass in the slot, Cameranesi snapped a shot off the right post and into the net, past the glove of LaCouvee, to make the score, 4-3.
